This book became the favorite story my 4-year-old loves to read at bed-time. It is beautifully illustrated and the story is not only empowering but encourages obedience, practicing one's art, and believing dreams can come true. It is great to learn new words and culture from the Kingdom of Benin and just seeing these beautiful black faces in the story was great! We are in love with Idia! Wonderfully done!!
This book was a wonderful way to share history that isn't often talked about in Western schools. I personally learnt a lot and the resources at the end of the book are a fantastic way to explore her history in more depth with children. I really admire that it doesn't shy away from heavier topics and it writes them in a way that allows adults to have conversations with children about what it means. Well done, and fantastic art!
Growing up, I wished I read more books that were similar to Njinga of Ndongo and Matamba. It is very interesting and inspiring. Also, it taught me more about history that I can in turn teach my future children. I'm looking forward to reading more like this.

Hello! I'm Ekiuwa Aire, a Nigerian-Canadian cultural connector who is passionate about building a love and knowledge of African history and culture with all kids.
I founded Our Ancestories and became a storyteller when I noticed the lack of diversity in the children’s book industry, specifically regarding children’s books on African history.
While I was initially motivated by a desire to teach my own kids about their history, I am now excited and humbled to be contributing to the preservation of African heritage and culture using my books.
